Molach volcanic embryo (colloquially just Molach ) is an extensive natural monument and geotope in the area of the Baden-Württemberg community of Erkenbrechtsweiler in the Esslingen district.

Characteristics

The natural monument was designated by ordinance of August 25, 1983.

Location and description

The natural monument is located on the western edge of the Alb plateau Erkenbrechtsweiler, Urach-Kirchheim volcanic area, Central Swabian Alb.

It is a maar-like trough with a rounded outline (diameter approx. 120 meters), in the eastern part of which there is a shallow, at times water-filled depression (diameter approx. 35 meters, depth approx. Three meters). The trough with the recess represents the gate of a small, only in Miozän active phreatomagmatic represents volcano and was created by sagging ( compaction ) of the vent contents (u. A. Basalt ). The hollow shape typical for the chimneys of the "Swabian volcano" located on the Alb plateau is already cut erosively starting from the nearby upper edge of the Alb eaves.

The Molach is also protected as a geotope under the name Vulkanembryo Molach SW Erkenbrechtsweiler .

In earlier times, the part filled with water was used as a bathing area.
