Vurnon San Benito Anita (born April 4, 1989 in Willemstad , Curacao , Netherlands Antilles ) is a Dutch football player . The midfielder has been part of Leeds United's squad since summer 2017 .

Career

society

Vurnon Anita was born on Curaçao (part of the Netherlands Antilles until 2010 ) and came to the Netherlands with his parents as a toddler , where he started playing football at the local football club in Maarssen . When Anita was seven years old, the family went back to Curaçao for a year; here he played for CVV Willemstad, a club from the capital of the Caribbean island. In 1997 the Anitas came back to the Netherlands, the young Vurnon played again for VV Maarssen. In 1999, the then midfield director of his team moved to the AFC Ajax youth team in Amsterdam . At the age of 16, Anita made her debut under coach Henk ten Cate on March 19, 2006 in Ajax's first team: as too many midfielders were injured, A-youth Anita was in the Eredivisie game at FC Groningen alongside Thomas Vermaelen and Steven Pienaar , Markus Rosenberg and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar over 90 minutes on the pitch. However, the match was lost 2: 3. Three days later he was also used in the cup semi-final against Roda JC , which Ajax won 4-1 after extra time. His coach in the U-17 national team, Ruud Kaiser , said of him at the time that he had "enormous running ability, incredible acceleration and an overview". He ensures the balance between attack and defense in his team. Nevertheless, in this and the following two seasons he remained a fixture only in the Amsterdam youth teams.

Only in the following season Anita came to his second league game. On February 18, 2007 in the 2-2 draw against Excelsior, his teammates in midfield were Edgar Davids , Wesley Sneijder and Gabri . A season followed in which he could not record a single league use. It was not until the winter of 2008/09 that he slowly advanced from a supplement to a regular player under Marco van Basten , benefiting from various injuries to the regulars Gabri, Eyong Enoh , Rasmus Lindgren and Jan Vertonghen . Anita mostly played in right midfield, occasionally on the left - even if he is not two-footed, the skills of the left foot are enough for a decent shot - and she made 16 eredivisie appearances. In the 2009/10 season he moved under Martin Jol to the position of left defender and made 26 games in the Eredivisie; after finishing third in the previous season, Ajax finished second this year, just one point behind FC Twente . In November 2009 Anita extended his contract with the Amsterdam team by one year until the end of the 2012 season. After Jol was replaced by Frank de Boer in December 2010 , Anita moved back into midfield in the Ajax game formation.

For the 2012/13 season Anita moved to Newcastle United , where he signed a five-year contract until June 30, 2017.

National team

On the international stage, he was first noticed in the U-17 national team coached by Ruud Kaiser when he scored two goals in qualifying for the U-17 European Championship in 2005 , one of them in a 3-2 win in Germany against the selection of Host . At that time he also played in the selection in the right midfield. At the final tournament in Italy, the team, which also included the future national team player Dirk Marcellis and Anita's Amsterdam club mates John Goossens and Jeffrey Sarpong , reached the final, which they lost 2-0 to the Turkish selection. With this, Kaiser's team qualified for the U-17 World Cup in Peru that same year, where - also with Anita and Marcellis - they lost to eventual world champions Mexico in the semi-finals. In the "small final" there was the game of revenge against the Turkish team, in which the Dutch were successful this time with 2: 1 and thus secured third place. In total, Anita scored three goals in 16 games in the U-17 team.

In 2007 he was in the European squad for the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup . After good performances at the club in the 2009/10 season, bond coach Bert van Marwijk called him , somewhat surprisingly, to the senior national team's training camp in Hoenderloo in May 2010 . A few days later, Anita was also appointed to the provisional 30-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa . In Hoenderloo the little Ajacide van Marwijk impressed, who praised him as “fast, versatile and aggressive”. Since Anita can play left and right in defense, he could be a good alternative in the World Cup squad in view of an unhealed injury to Giovanni van Bronckhorst . At the international test match against Mexico on May 26, 2010 in Freiburg im Breisgau , he made his team debut when he came on for Edson Braafheid in the second half . For the 23er World Cup squad van Marwijk he was not considered. On September 7, 2010, he completed his last international match in the 2-1 win against Finland.
