The Waaghaus is a Gothic secular building in the old town of Winterthur . Today the Waaghaus houses the Kunsthalle Winterthur , a puppet theater and a grocery store. The Waaghaus is listed by the federal government in the list of cultural assets of national importance .

history

The weighing house was built in 1503 instead of two burned down town houses. The hall on the ground floor then served as a department store and contained the city scales , where goods were weighed and customs cleared - hence the name of the house. Public events and, from 1531, theatrical performances were held on the upper floors. The wood carvings were added on the upper floors around 1590. During the reconstruction of the Town Hall 1782-84 also was the city library for three years housed in the Waaghaus.

When the movement of goods with the emerging railroad was shifted to the rails, the scale lost its importance and was rebuilt by the then city architect Karl Wilhelm Bareiss 1863–1864. After that, the fire brigade , the music college and the collection of the Kunstverein Winterthur were housed in the building in the former weighing house. After these users moved out again in the 20th century, the weighing house was used for a wide variety of purposes, for example there was a large reading room with an output library on the ground floor.

In 1928 the facade of the weighing house was painted red. The exhibition space on the upper floor was closed in 1916 and reopened in 1971. At the same time, the puppet theater, now the Winterthur puppet theater, moved into the Waaghaus. In 1978/1879 the weighing house was renovated and restored. With the reopening, the exhibition space was officially handed over to the new sponsoring association of the Kunsthalle Winterthur. Today there is a grocery store next to the art gallery and the theater on the ground floor.
