action

This novel introduces the night watch in its original cast with its depraved professional approach. Led by the drinking-addicted Captain Samuel Mumm , Sergeant Fred Colon and Corporal Cecil W. St. J. "Nobby" Nobbs eke out their embarrassing watchful lives. That only changes when a new recruit from the Spitzhorn Mountains, the young carrot iron founder's son, enters the scene. The two meter tall adopted dwarf is full of enthusiasm, understands nothing metaphorical and knows the law inside out.

While the guard is growing into a new self-image, a group of quarrelsome little minds under the leadership of the Supreme Great Master tries to bring the monarchy back to the city. They summon a great dragon that is supposed to spread a little terror, only to be defeated by a well-groomed hero. Then the city savior would ascend the throne and, advised by the Supreme Great Master, rule as a puppet king. It actually succeeds in summoning the dragon, but the creature becomes independent and takes over power itself. The city has a dragon king.

Mumm and his people now have to deal with the kite. Contact with Lady Käsedick , a marsh kite breeder, is helpful in this situation . With their help and with the support of Eroll, an apparently degenerate swamp kite, the guard finally manages to master the situation.
