The Waidhaus , also called Renthaus , is the oldest preserved secular building in the city of Görlitz . During its long history it has served a wide variety of purposes and has undergone numerous renovations. The name of the building, which is still in use today, comes from the era when the house was used as a stacking house for the dye plant woad .

location

The Waidhaus rises on the Kirchberg plateau between the Peterskirche in the north and the buildings on the Hainwald in the south. To the south of the building, Predigergässchen runs up to the Hainwald. To the east of the Waidhaus, the Kirchberg drops steeply towards the banks of the Lusatian Neisse . A footpath leads from Neißstrasse and Uferstrasse up to the Kirchberg. To the west is the place at the Peterskirche.

history

As early as the first half of the 12th century, a free yard was mentioned on the property , which served as a farm yard for the sovereign's castle and was probably managed by Bohemian servants .

At the end of the 14th century the Waidhaus was used as a brewery. At the beginning of the 15th century the house changed hands several times in short periods. The mayor Bartholomäus Eberhard, after whom the property was named for a long time, is probably one of the most famous owners . In 1425 the city finally bought the house from his heirs. At that time the Waidhaus still had a spacious tower - the Eberhards Tower - which, according to the council accounts, was demolished during the Hussite crisis in 1426. Between the end of April and mid-June 1428, the Erfurt aid team under Tiezmann von Weberstedt moved into the courtyard . The farm was also used as accommodation for the Bohemian nobleman Johann von Michelsberg for more than three months in 1432.

From 1447 to 1529 the Waidhaus was used as a school building. In 1530 the school was moved to 7 Krebsgasse. Then the house was set up as a stacking house for the dyer's woad. The building was probably only brought to its present height at this time. Larger storage rooms were also created. Up until that time the woad was stored in private houses and sold there. In 1529 the older inscription "Nil actum creades, cum quid restabit agendum 1479" was walled in on the north gable, reminding of a heavy fire in 1479. In 1479 the Waidhaus burned down due to a lightning strike. The following can be read on the west facade: "In rebus humanis nihil praeclarius nihil praestantius quam de republica bene mereri 1529" . In 1578, the two houses on the side facing the Neisse were removed and the roof was leveled. This condition of the eastern roof was preserved for centuries until the building was restored in the 1990s according to a woodcut from 1565. As early as 1936, the gables were restored using the same woodcut.

The other common name Renthaus was given to the building from its use as a warehouse for the rural pension. The bailiff had his grain dumped here until 1732.

The fire brigade has been housed in the Waidhaus since the Görlitz professional fire service was founded in 1897. In 1907 she moved to the new building between Gobbinstrasse and Krölstrasse.

During work on the building in 1908, around 50 stonemason's marks applied with red chalk came to light in a room inside . From this it was concluded that the Waidhaus was probably also used as a stone hut for the workers at the parish church of St. Peter and Paul .

Todays use

After the renovation from 1993 to 1994, the Waidhaus is the seat of the Monument Academy - an educational institution of the German Foundation for Monument Protection . There is also the Training Center for Crafts and Monument Preservation e. V. in the building. The association offers numerous courses and further training opportunities for restorers from many trades. It was founded in 1991 as the first artisanal monument center in the eastern federal states. As early as 2008, the Görlitz Monument Center was highlighted, along with three other training centers in Europe, as an exemplary training center for the qualification of craftsmen in order to preserve the European building heritage.
