Waimate is a town in Waimate District region Region on the South Island of New Zealand . The city is the seat of the Waimate District Council .
geography
The city is located about 40 km south-southwest of Timaru and around 41 kilometers north of Oamaru between the mountains of the 958 m high Mount Shrives and the 1086 m high Mount Studholme on the western side and the Wainono Lagoon and the coast to the Pacific Ocean from the east Page. Waimate Creek flows through the city and flows into the Pacific Ocean about 9 km east.
history
Waimate was connected from 1877 to 1966 on the branch line of the Waimate Branch at Studholme about 7 km further east with the South Island Main Trunk Railway . For about 70 years the line went beyond Waimate to Waihao Downs . This extension was discontinued in 1953 and the entire branch line on March 31, 1966. This made Waimate the first major city in New Zealand to lose the rail connection.

In the 2013 census, the city had 2,778 inhabitants, 2.0% less than in the 2006 census.
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 82 runs through Waimate , which connects to New Zealand State Highway 1 around 7 km northeast and ends in Kurow , 46 km east, where it connects to New Zealand State Highway 83 .
Rail transport
The railway line of the South Island Main Trunk Railway runs almost parallel to State Highway 1 about 6 km east of the city, without having a stop for the city.
Education
The city has three elementary schools, with Waimate Main School , one grades 1-6 that was attended by 79 students in 2017, with the Waimate Centennial School , one elementary school that grades 1-6 that was attended by 171 students and with St Patrick's School , an elementary school with grades 1 to 8, which was attended by 35 students.
Attractions
- The Church of St. Augustine's Church at the John Stree was established in 1872 by the renowned New Zealand architect Benjamin Mountfort designed.
- In the city center there is a marble statue of Zealandia , which as the Waimate South African War Memorial commemorates the Second Boer War in South Africa . It is one of two statues nationwide, the other is in Palmerston .
- The city is known in New Zealand for the population of red-necked wallabies that were introduced from Australia and now live wild in the rural areas around the city. They are also raised on farms and sometimes exported for zoos.
Sports
The Waimate Rugby Football Club takes the game Operation South Canterbury in part. The club is part of the South Canterbury Rugby Football Union . There is a golf club in Waimate northwest of town.

- AM Hamilton , known for building the Hamilton Road through Kurdistan and for developing the Callender-Hamilton bridge system.
- Eric Batchelor , the Commonwealth's most decorated sergeantin World War II .
- Howard Kippenberger , Major General and Commanding Officer of New Zealand Forces in North Africa during World War II. He spent much of his early childhood in Waimate on his father's farm.
