The municipality of Wain (Swabian pronunciation: [ voe̯ ]) is located in the Biberach district in Baden-Württemberg ( Germany ) between Biberach an der Riss and Ulm .

history

First mention

Wain was first mentioned in a document in 1259. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the place was under the Free Imperial City of Ulm .

Religions

The Reformation was introduced in Wain in 1573. From 1650 onwards, Protestant religious refugees were resettled in the village; they had been driven from their home in Carinthia and Styria . These exiles formed the bulk of the local population. Today, in addition to the Protestant, there is also a New Apostolic church in the village.

Municipal council

The municipal council has 10 members and consists of the honorary councilors and the mayor as chairman. The mayor is entitled to vote in the municipal council. In the local elections on May 26, 2019, the local council was elected by majority vote. Majority election takes place if only one nomination has been submitted or none at all. The applicants with the highest number of votes are elected. In 2019, voter turnout was 70.6% (2014: 63.0%).

In the mayoral election on November 30, 2014, Stephan Mantz was elected the new mayor of the municipality of Wain with 95% of the votes; he took office on March 1, 2015.

His predecessor Christian Schlenk held the office for 24 years.

coat of arms

The Wainer coat of arms is described as follows: "In red under a raised silver (white) rafter, a five-petalled silver (white) rose topped with a heart-shaped red shield, inside a silver (white) Latin cross (Luther rose)". The Luther rose and the Austrian colors red-white-red refer to the evangelical religious refugees from Austria of the 17th century; the rafter is taken from the coat of arms of the Lords of Wain. The coat of arms was awarded on August 29, 1967 by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior.

Parish partnership

A partnership with Arriach in the state of Carinthia in Austria has existed since 1972 .

A former barn was converted into a cultural barn. The house is a popular place in the Upper Swabian cultural landscape. Concerts, song evenings and cabaret, readings, exhibitions, workshops, theater performances and lectures are presented in the special ambience of a former rural estate.

The Wainer coat of arms was awarded in 1967. The Luther rose and the colors derived from the Austrian red-white-red shield indicate the Lutheran refugees who were expelled from Carinthia and Styria in the 17th century and who came to Wain. The rafter is taken from the coat of arms of the Lords of Wain.

In Wain there is a golf club, football club, athletics club with several sports, a music club and other, mostly village-like clubs.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2006 there were around 500 employees in medium-sized companies.

Wain has its own elementary school, kindergarten and community library.
