The bronze monument was designed and manufactured by the Worpswede sculptor Uwe Häßler in 1980, after which the first pedestrian zone in the district was created here from 1975. The whale is a gift from the Sparkasse Bremen and is therefore in front of their branch.

The whale tail fin monument in the Vegesack city garden is also located in Bremen by the artist Häßler .

Whaling and Vegesack

The memories of the whaling tradition in the whaling town of Vegesack are nurtured by this whale , as well as by the whale jaw at Vegesack harbor and the whale tail fin on the Weser promenade at Utkiek .

In the 17th century the port of Vegesack developed into a base for whaling in the Arctic . For this purpose, a Greenland company from Bremen was founded in 1653 . From 1830 the shipyard owner Johann Lange (1775–1844) built up his fleet of ships. In 1837 he applied for a license to operate a liquor factory and participated in whaling. In 1843 a public limited company was founded in Vegesack "... for the purpose of Greenland fishing ...". Whaling in the Arctic continued until 1872. Petroleum as a new fuel made whale extraction unprofitable.
