Walter Beltz

Walter Ernst Beltz (born April 25, 1935 in Ludwigslust ; † April 22, 2006 in Berlin ) was a religious scholar and orientalist .

Life

Walter Beltz studied theology , oriental studies and religious studies in Rostock , Greifswald and at the Humboldt University in Berlin . This was followed by a job at the Evangelical Academy Berlin-Brandenburg and in 1966 his dissertation on the Kaleb traditions in the Old Testament . In 1970 he completed his habilitation thesis on the Adam Apocalypse from Codex V of Nag Hammadi. Jewish building blocks in Gnostic systems at the Humboldt University.

Beltz was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and took part in the Second All-Christian Peace Assembly in Prague in 1964. He worked for many years in the Oriental and Classical Studies section and was an associate professor for general religious history at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . In addition, he was editor of Halle's Contributions to Oriental Studies and a member of the PEN. Under his leadership, a group of seven scientists agreed to advance the processing of the documents of the Institutum Judaicum et Muhammedicum .

Beltz died in Berlin in 2006 and was buried in the Tolkewitz urn grove in Dresden.

Beltz became known for his books such as God and the Gods (1974), Longing for Paradise (1979), The Myths of the Egyptians (1982) and Lexicon of Last Things (1993). Beltz was also the editor or co-editor of several volumes in the series Hallesche Contributions to Oriental Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
