Walter Friedensburg

Karl Walter Friedensburg (born March 6, 1855 in Hamburg , † February 19, 1938 in Wernigerode ) was a German archivist and historian .

Life

Walter Friedensburg was the son of a Hamburg newspaper editor. During his studies in Göttingen he became a member of the 1874 Schwarzenburg Bund - connection Burschenschaft Germania . After studying history at the University of Göttingen and Breslau , Friedensburg received a job as an archive assistant at the Magdeburg State Archives in 1880 . Previously, in 1877, he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. In 1882 he was appointed archive assistant. From 1878 he worked as a private lecturer in Marburg and later in Göttingen . In 1889 Walter Friedensburg became an associate professor at the University of Halle .

From 1892 to 1901 he headed the Prussian Historical Institute in Rome and in 1901 became director and director of the State Archives in Stettin . It was here that he was appointed the Secret Archives Council. In this position he moved to the Magdeburg State Archives in 1913, which he managed until his retirement in 1923. In Wernigerode in the Harz region , he spent his old age in the Villa Roonstrasse 15 he had acquired.

From 1913 Walter Friedensburg was a member of the historical commission for the province of Saxony and for Anhalt, which he took over in 1922 and 1923.
