Walter Hellman

Walter Hellman (born June 15, 1916 in Gamla Nordsjö , Sweden , † July 28, 1975 ) was a world champion in checkers .

Life

Hellman was born in Gamla Nordsjö, Sweden, in 1916 and moved to Gary, Indiana, with his family in 1926 . He died in 1975.

Checkers

Hellman was the most (as of 2014) reigning longest World Champion in checkers (Version: Checkers Three-Move Restriction ). He held the title from 1948 to 1955 and from 1958 until his death in 1975. He was an unmatched nine times in the finals of the World Cup and lost only one: 1955 to Marion Tinsley .
