Walter Kroell

Walter Kröll (* 1938 in Waldbreitbach ) is a German physicist .

Kröll studied mathematics and physics at the University of Bonn and was awarded a doctorate in 1964. rer. nat. PhD. From 1967 on he held professorships for theoretical physics at the Universities of Bochum , Essen and Marburg . His areas of work are theoretical plasma physics , conventional gas discharge plasmas, lowering the ionization energy, and turbulent plasmas.

Between 1972 and 1979 Kröll was the founding rector of the University / Comprehensive University of Essen, and from 1979 to 1987 he was President of the Philipps University of Marburg. In 1987 he took over the chairmanship of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). In 2001 he was elected the first full-time President of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers . Kröll occupied this position until 2005. Jürgen Mlynek was his successor . Kröll has been a member of the board of the Society of Friends of the DLR (GvF) since 2006 .

In addition to these functions, Kröll was active in a number of national and international bodies. Among other things, he was a member of the Presidium of the World Rectors' Conference (AIU, 1985 to 1990), Chairman of the Working Group of Large Research Institutions , the forerunner of the Helmholtz Association (AGF, 1991 to 1993), Vice President of the European Science Foundation (ESF, 1994 to 1998), Chairman of the Association of European Research Establishments in Aeronautics (EREA, 1996 to 1998), founding chairman of the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE, 2001 to 2002) and chairman of the German delegation to the ESA Council (1998 to 2001). Kröll is also a member of several supervisory and advisory bodies in the private sector (including Siemens) and public research institutions (including the University of Heidelberg and the University of Mainz ).
