Walther Stützle

Walther Stützle (born November 29, 1941 in Westerland , Sylt, † August 8, 2016 in Berlin ) was a German political scientist and journalist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1961, Walther Stützle was a reserve officer candidate in the Navy from 1961 to 1962 . From 1962 to 1966 he studied political science at the Free University of Berlin , the University of Hamburg and the University of Bordeaux ; he graduated as a political scientist and was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. PhD. His academic teachers included Ernst Fraenkel , Bruno Schultz and Gilbert Ziebura . He then worked as a lecturer at the Theodor Heuss Academy of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Gummersbach . In 1968 he worked at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London .

From 1969 he held various functions in the Federal Ministry of Defense . From 1977 to 1982, Stützle headed the planning staff of the Federal Ministry of Defense under Ministers Georg Leber and Hans Apel (both SPD). His military rank was first lieutenant in the reserve sea . From 1983 he was a correspondent for the Stuttgarter Zeitung . From 1986 to 1991 he was director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute . At the Berliner Tagesspiegel he was deputy editor-in-chief from 1991 to 1994 and editor-in-chief from 1994 to 1998.

From 1998 to 2002 he was a permanent state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defense under Minister Rudolf Scharping (SPD). After his increasing disempowerment in favor of Inspector General Harald Kujat , Stützle resigned.

From September 2004 Walther Stützle was Senior Distinguished Fellow of the Science and Politics Foundation . He also worked as a freelance writer and took on various teaching assignments. From 2008 until a few months before his death he was also chairman of the international advisory board of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation in Berlin. In 2014, he and others initiated the “ Appeal for a Different Policy on Russia ”.
