Touring rowing is a form of rowing in which longer distances - often over several days - are covered on rivers and larger inland waters. Hiking trips in branched canal systems are also popular in the lowlands.

history

The sport emerged at the end of the 19th century and has numerous followers, especially in northern Germany. Many clubs founded around the turn of the century had the goal of making this sport possible for less well-off groups, in contrast to noble rowing clubs. In addition to rowing as an eventful popular sport , they particularly promoted rowing for young people and women , which often led to lively public debate. The Märkische Ruderverein (founded in 1901) and the Prussian Rowing Club (1903) were among the first of these rowing clubs in the Berlin area . Marie von Bunsen was probably the first woman in Germany to go on touring rowing tours alone in her rowing boat. She reports on her experiences on rivers and canals between 1905 and 1915 in her book “Im Ruderboot durch Deutschland”, which was published in 1914 by Fischer Verlag.

Boat material

Touring rowing prefers boats that are wider than normal competition boats, with fiber-reinforced plastics predominating today . Typical hiking boats are often equipped with watertight storage space. The extension of the hiking trips beyond a day trip enables the exploration of entire rivers, canals and interesting bank landscapes.

Tours

Well-trained people can do a few dozen kilometers a day upstream and up to 100 km downstream, depending on the current. You will spend the night outdoors, on campsites or in hostels . It is also common to spend the night in club boat houses along the course of the water. Many clubs offer this for a small fee.

Many schools have their own clubs for touring rowing and organize regular hiking trips or regattas . Since hiking rowing is not an Olympic sport, major events such as hiking rowing meetings are aimed less at top-class than at popular sport . Family vacations in the northern German or Polish lake districts are also enjoying increasing popularity .
