Old city arms of Swakopmund - 1972 to July 28, 2009

The coat of arms of the city of Swakopmund was introduced on July 28, 2009. The earlier coat of arms existed since November 30, 1972 and was designed by C. Pama from Newlands in South Africa .

Blazon

Blazon : The split shield is split at the top. At the top in gold a green Welwitschia . Rear stands up in the blue field a silver lighthouse with red spire on two silver waves and its golden light radiates to the sides.

At the bottom of the silver field a red barracks ( Alte Kaserne Swakopmund ) protrudes from the base of the shield . The applied central shield is divided by a red oblique left-hand bar in blue with a golden sun and green (see flag of Namibia ).

A silver banner with the black capital letters below the shield called the motto : "PROVIDENTIAE MEMOR".

meaning

The Welwitschia mirabilis on a yellow desert background is a national symbol of Namibia, which is supposed to symbolize the equality of the citizens of Swakopmund. The Swakopmund lighthouse is a symbol of the city and reminds of its connection to the sea. The lower half of the coat of arms represents the old barracks , also a symbol of the city and a national monument in Namibia . The middle shield shows the flag of Namibia . Swakopmund's Latin motto, which was also the motto of the Kingdom of Saxony , runs under the coat of arms : “Providentiae memor” , translated: “ Mindful of Providence ”.

Previous coat of arms

The old coat of arms of Swakopmund had the same division, but partly different contents. The upper left corner showed a three-spike on a yellow background, symbolizing the three languages Afrikaans , English and German . The center of the coat of arms showed the colors of the German Empire black, white and red instead of the Namibian flag - a reference to the founding history of Swakopmund.
