Warren Thew (born April 10, 1927 in Fairport NY , United States , † December 31, 1984 in Thalwil , Canton Zurich ) was an American - Swiss pianist , composer , poet and illustrator .

Life

Warren Thew was born in Fairport NY (USA) in 1927 . He trained as a pianist and composer at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester . 1951–1956 he was active in Washington DC as a soloist, chamber musician and lied accompanist . As a piano improviser he played for silent film presentations at the Library of Congress ( Library of Congress ) and at the Martha Graham School of Modern Dance . In 1951 he presented the world premier recordings of Rachmaninoff's Études Tableaux opus 39 and his piano sonata No. 1 opus 28 on record .

In 1956 Warren Thew moved to Switzerland with his wife Lisbet (1920–2014) and from then on lived in Kilchberg ZH . For a short time he continued his studies with Max Egger. In the following years he developed a lively international concert activity. He played music from all eras and on various keyboard instruments ( clavichord , harpsichord , fortepiano , modern grand piano ). For several years he led a concert training class at the Zurich Music Academy (now ZHDK ). His commitment to contemporary Swiss music production deserves special mention, especially in the form of (world premieres) performances of several works by Zurich composers such as Max Kuhn and Hermann Haller . The Lower Engadine village of Sent had been his second domicile since 1972, and he was very interested in the Rhaeto-Romanic language spoken there, in which he also began to write poetry.

After a long illness, Warren Thew died on New Year's Eve 1984.
