Water management of the Talayot culture

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The water management of the Talayot culture on Menorca but also on Mallorca (Ets Antigors) consisted of several, sometimes complicated systems with the aim of keeping water reserves in communal cisterns - the sitjots - for periods of lack of precipitation .

Such reservoirs have been excavated in Sant Agustí Vell , Son Serra (Da Na Maria Civit), Torre d'en Galmés , Torralba d'en Salord , Torrelló, Binissafullet and Torre Vella. The installations consisted of a network of covered channels connecting a series of troughs or troughs cut into the rock. The water was collected in them and purified using various methods. The talayotics also had cisterns in which rainwater collected.

More important features were large fountains such as those at Alcaidús (3), Binimaimut Cala's Coves, Macarella and Na Patarrà , where the water level was reached via ramps and stairs cut out of the rock.

Drinking water was an important element in the development of early societies. The well-being of the people depended on its abundance or lack, typical of the Mediterranean islands.
