Wassili Jakowlewitsch Zinger , Russian Василий Яковлевич Цингер , (born January 30, 1836 in Moscow , † March 2, 1907 ) was a Russian mathematician and botanist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " WJZinger ".

Life

Zinger was the son of a German-born private mathematics teacher in Moscow and studied mathematics and physics at Lomonossow University with a degree in mathematics in 1857. He received his doctorate in 1862 (with a dissertation on the method of least squares) and was then an assistant professor at Lomonossow -University and habilitated in 1867 (Russian doctorate, with a dissertation on equilibrium figures of liquids). He became a full professor and retired in 1888. From 1876 to 1878 he was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and in 1878 and 1883 Vice Rector.

He was president of the Moscow Mathematical Society from 1886 to 1891 .

As a mathematician, he dealt with applied mathematics (mechanics) and synthetic geometry.

As a botanist he mainly dealt with plants from Central Asia, about which he published a catalog. He owned an estate in Tula Province, which he retired to when he retired.

Honors

The grass genera Zingeria P.A. Smirn . and Zingeriopsis Prob. are named after him.
