Athanasieff's tombstone

Wassilij Athanasieff ( Russian Василий Афанасьев Wassili Afanassjew ; born April 6/17 , 1788 in St. Petersburg ; † February 13/25 , 1823 in Stuttgart ) was court chaplain and confessor of the Württemberg Queen Katharina Pavlovna and the first priest of the Russian Orthodox Municipality of Stuttgart.

Athanasieff came to Stuttgart on April 13, 1816. In addition to him, Katharina Pavlovna's entourage included a psalm reader and three choristers. On the day of his arrival, Athanasieff held a thanksgiving service for the successful trip and thus initiated the tradition of Russian Orthodox services in Stuttgart. He became the founder of the oldest active Russian Orthodox community in Germany. In 1820 he consecrated the foundation stone for Katharina's grave chapel on the Württemberg .

Little is known about Athanasieff's living conditions. The gravestone preserved in the Stuttgart Hoppenlaufriedhof , which was rediscovered and restored in the 1990s, shows that he was married. In the German version of the grave inscription - the stone is inscribed in Russian and German - it can be read: The desolate widow erected this monument for him.
