Wasteland is a Brazilian-British documentary from the year 2010 . Lucy Walker followed with the camera an art project with garbage collectors at a garbage dump near Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

The film is based on an art project by the Brazilian sculptor and photographer Vik Muniz , who lives in America , which is reflected in the fact that he and the collectors at the Jardim Gramacho garbage dump near Rio de Janeiro earn their living by making recyclable waste like Collect metals or PET plastic etc. and sell them to middlemen, create art, partly from garbage. The project was filmed by the British Lucy Walker and her crew, so that the documentary Waste Land was made. In addition, the film deals intensively with the living and social situation of the garbage collectors.

Waste Land has received several awards, including the Sundance Film Festival ( audience award ) and the Berlinale . The film was also nominated for an Oscar in 2011 .
