The classic wasting syndrome is an unwanted weight loss of at least 10% of the original body weight , which occurs with persistent diarrhea and / or fever and is not caused by an infection . The wasting syndrome is part of the so-called AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

In most cases, a diagnosis of wasting syndrome has to be revised on closer examination, since a specific pathogen that causes the symptoms can be found.

etiology

In true wasting syndrome, in which cachexia (if tumor-induced, then tumor cachexia ) and weight loss due to so-called opportunistic infections are excluded, the causes are usually malabsorption , malnutrition and hypogonadism .
