history

The city gained historical importance through the Battle of Wavre on June 18 and 19, 1815, in which French troops defeated the Prussian rearguard without preventing Napoleon's devastating defeat in the Battle of Waterloo, which took place just a few kilometers away .

As part of a regional reform in 1977, the municipalities of Limal and Bierges were incorporated. Wavre has been the provincial capital since 1995, when the former province of Brabant was divided.

Culture and sights

History game

Since 1954, the game "Jeu de Jean et Alice" with song, music, dance and ballet has taken place about every five years . The idea for this came from Pastor Jean Pensis (February 8, 1907– March 27, 1987), who wanted an activity for the inauguration of the new carillon on Easter 1954. The text comes from his friend, the doctor and poet Auguste Brasseur-Capart (February 26, 1905– June 10, 1978), the music by Auguste Du Pont Del Sart (June 19, 1912– April 6, 1986). The performance ends with the Chant de Wavre (Song of Wavre), the refrain of which is also played on the hour by the carillon of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church:

«Nous aimons notre bonne ville, ses habitants, ses bois, ses champs,
La vallée, où coule tranqille, la Dyle.
De cœur, nous resterons toujours vrais Wavriens, car nous le sommes
Et la ville, où tout se transforme, peut changer, mais pas nos amours. »

“We love our beautiful city, its inhabitants, its forests, its fields,
the valley where the Dyle flows calmly.
In our hearts we always remain true Wavrians because we are
and the city, where everything changes, can change, but not our love. "

- Auguste Brasseur-Capart : Jeu de Jean et Alice. Wavre , 1987.

In terms of content, the aim is for the citizens of Wavres to ask their landlord , Seigneur Jean, and his wife, Dame Alice, for more freedom, to receive the desired certificate and to be happy and thankful. In fact, on April 23, 1222, Wavre received a charte de franchises signed by the Duke of Lorraine, Brabant and Limburg , in which Henry I of Brabant , Count of Leuven , granted the city the same rights as Leuven, allowing it a legal and to become political unity and B. owning a town hall.
