The VIII Military District Command was a Military District Command of the Armed Forces . The task of this command authority was the territorial defense in Defense Area VIII.

The Military District Command VIII was set up in 1990 in Neubrandenburg . Between 1991 and 1994, the management of the military area was carried out by the merged staff " Division / Military Area Command VIII". From 1995 the designation was "Wehrbereichskommando VIII / 14th Panzer Grenadier Division ". Defense area VIII included Mecklenburg-West Pomerania , Saxony-Anhalt , Brandenburg and Berlin . Military District Command VIII was decommissioned in 1997.

history

Lineup

After the accession of the new federal states , the Bundeswehr became the successor to the National People's Army in East Germany . From October 1990, defense areas and defense area commands were planned in the new federal states, analogous to the tried and tested structure of the territorial army in West Germany . The military area command VIII essentially took over the leadership of the military district V of the land forces of the National People's Army with staff in Neubrandenburg, which existed until reunification . The large units of the National People's Army deployed in military district V , essentially the 9th Armored Division , the 6th Motorized Rifle Division , the 8th Motorized Rifle Division and the 1st Motorized Rifle Division , were decommissioned. Defense area VIII specifically comprised the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Saxony-Anhalt , Brandenburg and Berlin . Downstream were defending the district commands deallocated. The following defense district commands were set up:

The Defense District Command 100 / Location Commandantur Berlin was set up at the same time, but was not placed under Defense District Command VIII until 1995.

The Military Area Command VIII was initially subordinate to the Bundeswehr Command East and was subordinated to the Corps / Territorial Command East on July 1, 1991 for integration into the Army .

The merged military area command

As early as March 1991, Military Area Command VIII for taking Army Structure V was combined with the units that were intended for the planned 14th Panzer Grenadier Division. The reclassified military area command was given the new designation "Division / Military Area Command VIII".

After the group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD) withdrew from the East German garrisons, the integration of the East German units into the NATO command structure and the field army could begin in accordance with the two-plus-four treaty . The division shares of the "Division / Wehrbereichskommando VIII", which had previously been part of the territorial army, were reorganized as the 14th Panzer Grenadier Division . The subordinate homeland security brigades were renamed accordingly to tank brigades or tank grenadier brigades . On January 1, 1995, the name was changed to "Wehrbereichskommando VIII / 14. Panzergrenadierdivision". In the event of a defense , the merged staff would probably have been separated again. Even in the event of a defense, the military area command would have remained part of the territorial army under national command; the divisional shares would have been subordinated to the corps and thus indirectly to the NATO headquarters.

resolution

On October 1, 1997, the "Military District Command VIII / 14th Panzer Grenadier Division" was separated. The 14th Panzer Grenadier Division continued to exist as an independent division . Military District Command VIII was disbanded on October 1, 1997 - earlier than all other Military District Command. The organization of the territorial defense in the northern part of the "old" military area VIII, specifically in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , was assigned to the military area command I in Kiel . The tasks in the southern military area, specifically in the federal states of Berlin , Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg , were taken over by Military District Command VII in Leipzig .

structure

At the beginning of 1995 the following territorial units were essentially subordinate to the "Military District Command VIII / 14th Panzer Grenadier Division":

Association badge

Internal association badge of the staff of the military area command VIII: a variation of the coat of
arms of Hohenzollern or the Brandenburg eagle with the iron cross

The military area command carried a union badge with the following blazon :

" Tied by a silver cord with woven black thread, divided into black, red, gold in a golden central shield a one-headed black eagle , the head turned to the right, the wings open, but with closed plumage, beak, tongue and fangs of red color ( Federal eagle); the middle shield below accompanied by the black Roman numeral  VIII. "

The shield division corresponded to the flag of Germany . The motifs of the association badge were also similar to the coat of arms of Germany . The federal eagle was the German heraldic animal . He was depicted similarly on the troop flags . The close reference to the coat of arms and the flag of Germany made it clear that the territorial army and its military area commands remained under the authority of the national commander even in the event of a defense and were not assigned to NATO .

The association badges of the command authorities in the territorial army were particularly similar. In particular, the association badges of the higher-level territorial commands and the other military area commands differed only in their labeling. Also, the Badge of the Ministry of Defense was up on the board almost identical. The silver / black braided border of the military area commands symbolized the position below the Federal Ministry of Defense, which accordingly had a "higher quality" golden cord.
