Wehrtechnische Dienststellen ( WTD ) are branches of the Bundeswehr that try out and test military equipment that is to be newly introduced into the Bundeswehr. The original name was " Erprobungsstelle " with the abbreviation "E -stelle" until the 1980s .
The WTD are departments in the organizational area of equipment, information technology and use of the Bundeswehr and are subordinate to the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) in Koblenz .

Defense science institutes
In addition to the defense technology departments, the BAAINBw is subordinated to the Defense Science Institute for Protective Technologies - NBC Protection in Munster and the Defense Science Institute for Materials and Operating Materials in Erding .
