About this picture

Wendeburg is a municipality in the Peine district in Lower Saxony .

geography

Geographical location

Wendeburg is located on the north-western outskirts of Braunschweig . The townscape is shaped by agriculture. In the past few years new development areas have emerged in all districts. Nevertheless, the traditional structures have been preserved, so that one can speak of an “idyll in the countryside” with a high quality of life. In Wendeburg there is also an outdoor swimming pool, the Auebad, and a large shopping center.

The Aue and Erse flow through the municipality from south to north, and is symbolized by a golden bar at the foot of the municipal coat of arms.

Location of the districts in Wendeburg

The municipality consists of the following districts:

history

In the high Middle Ages (12th or 13th century) a castle was built where the military road from Braunschweig to Celle used to cross the floodplain. The oldest names are 1196–1197 Winetheburg and Wenedeburch . The assumption is that there is a naming that refers to the tribe of the Wends . There is no documentary or archaeological evidence of the settlement of Wenden, but the type of settlement in the Wendezelle district suggests this. The place name with the syllable "Wende" could refer to the Wends, but also to a personal name such as Winetho, Wendo or similar, or with the verb "wend "or be associated with a corner (= turn) of a (Gau) border. However, all of these interpretations are uncertain. It is obvious, however, based on Winethe , the interpretation as "pasture", which is explained by the location in the floodplain. The “castle” may have had its place on the site of today's Marienkirche.

The Marienkirche , with the church tower from the years 1250-1300, is the oldest building in the place. Obtained from the Middle Ages is on the west side of the steeple ordination panel , which was attached to a substantial conversion and subsequent Neuweihe the church in about 5 m height at the steeple. This stone shows the crucified with Mary and John, at their feet the praying donor couple. Below is a noble coat of arms and the year 1439.

coat of arms

In its coat of arms, the municipality of Wendeburg takes into account its former membership in the district as well as the current one: with the Braunschweig state and district colors blue-yellow, it commemorates its former membership and with the wolf's head as the motif of the Peine district coat of arms, its current one in the district of Peine, from March 1, 1974 However, the wolf's head has been on the consecration plaque at the Wendeburg church since 1439. The zinnenschildfuß represents the castle contained in the municipality name, the narrow bar in it is the Aue / Erse, which runs through the municipality. The ears of wheat symbolize agriculture, which used to be the most important branch of the economy and is still considerable today. The local council adopted the coat of arms on March 21, 1978 and the district of Peine approved it on July 11 of the same year. Design: Wilhelm Krieg.

World first

In 1903 Heinrich Büssing presented the first motor truck he had designed to the public. Barely six months later, the first motorized bus with 20 seats was ready for operation. After quarterly testing, Heinrich Büssing set up his first bus route between Wendeburg and Braunschweig on June 5, 1904. The bus line, which was initiated by the then Wendeburg pastor Otto Hayder, gave him the opportunity to continue testing his bus under his constant control. Only a few months later, the reliability and punctuality prompted the Kaiserliche Ober-Postdirektion Braunschweig to conclude a contract with Büssing for the transport of mail - from September 1, 1904. The Wendeburg – Braunschweig bus line is therefore the world's first successful power post bus line.

Place name

The place name results from the part “castle” and the obvious identifier “Winethe”, the Germanic education “Win-ithi”, “winja” means pasture, together so pasture place, pasture place. The name can also be based on a Wendish settlement. This would fit the fact that the district of Wendezelle is the westernmost Rundlingdorf in Germany. This is a typical Wendnic construction.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1968, the municipalities of Wendeburg, Wendezelle and Zweidorf voluntarily merged to form a new municipality of Wendeburg, which existed until February 28, 1974. In the course of the regional reform in Lower Saxony , the municipalities of Bortfeld, Didderse, and Harvesse became on March 1, 1974 , Meerdorf, Neubrück, Rüper, Sophiental, Wendeburg and Wense combined to form the newly created community of Wendeburg.

Outsourcing

On May 1, 1981, the Didderse community was reorganized by being separated from the Wendeburg community and incorporated into the Gifhorn district. The protests of the residents of Didderse were thus taken into account on the part of the country. The layout of the new municipality of Didderse does not exactly correspond to the extent of the former municipality of Didderse; part of the Feldmark remained in the municipality of Wendeburg.

religion

The Marienkirche is the Evangelical Lutheran church in the village of Wendeburg, completed in its present form in the 18th century. Opposite the church, on Braunschweiger Straße, there is a Protestant kindergarten. There are other Protestant churches in Bortfeld , Harvesse , Meerdorf , Rüper and Sophiental .

The Catholic St. Elisabeth Church was built in 1962/63. Today the church, which is located between Pastor-Derks-Weg and Rothbergstrasse, belongs to the Heilig Geist parish in Braunschweig-Lehndorf.

There is a New Apostolic Church in the Ersehof district of Neubrück.

traffic

The Federal Highway 2 - located on her here the motorway service stations "Zweidorfer wood - north side" and "Zweidorfer wood - South Side" - crosses the municipality, as well as the federal highway 214 , they cross at junction Braunschweig-Watenbüttel. For shipping there are the ports of Wendeburg on the Mittelland Canal and the Salzgitter branch canal , which begins here.
The rail traffic route of the Celle – Braunschweig line runs through the community. There used to be train stations in the districts of Wendezelle, Harvesse and Wense, which are currently all closed. The southern part of the route has been reactivated for the connection to the newly built Volkswagen logistics center .
As early as July 1, 1885, the Wendeburgers were able to get to
Braunschweig with a local public transport vehicle : The Wendeburg businessman Friedrich Wilhelm Taeger drove a private vehicle from Wendeburg to Braunschweig and back once a day, and he also carried the mail. In 1893 the Wendeburg haulier August Wegener took over this service with the twelve-seat stagecoach. Modern technology was introduced on June 5, 1904. In 1903 Heinrich Büssing set up his own truck factory in Braunschweig and built a bus, which he did not want to sell yet. At the urging of Wendeburg pastor Otto Hayder, Büssing began bus transport from Wendeburg to Braunschweig on the day mentioned. The Post recognized the reliability of the vehicle after a short time and from September 1, 1904 transferred the mail to the bus line. This was the start of the world's first successful motorized post bus line, Wendeburg – Braunschweig. The daily three-time tour of the bus led from Wendeburg via Wendezelle , Bortfeld , Völkenrode , Watenbüttel and Ölper to Braunschweig, the return journey accordingly.
