Whoever shows off has more from life is a documentary film by Hannelore Conradsen and Dieter Köster from 1999. Appearance is everything here, being rather a foreign word in the life of the so-called show - offs Jana and Alina, who came to Berlin with their parents from Russia , Sandra, who has already made it to Miss Arabella , and also with the elderly nurse Rainer , who uses his time of suffering in the Stasi prison for the purpose of self-exaggeration, showing off plays a major role.

action

They want to please at all costs, those four protagonists that the film accompanies on their weekend in Berlin. Sandra dyes her hair extremely light blonde so that it always stands out in the crowd. For them, being blonde is a way of life. She always dresses like a ladylike and despite her considerable size, she wears shoes with very high heels - even when washing up. The right image is everything for Sandra, whether there is really something behind it remains secondary to her. With her boyfriend, she chases from one casting to the other and suddenly comes across professors and students from a fashion college. Suddenly reality plays into her dreams and she makes it with her futuristic evening gown into the real thunderstorm of flashlights.

The students Jana and Alina want to please at any price. They think they know that classmates with rich parents will automatically do this, whether smart or stupid . But nobody helps you. They manage it themselves with their own means - even in television talk shows - and tell untrue stories there about their true friendship. They wonder that everyone seems to believe them.

The main thing is to belong and be noticed! As a contemporary witness, Rainer leads groups of visitors through the former Stasi prison. Here, too, the book author, occasional actor and male nurse uses his acting talent to get confirmation. He in particular now wants to convey his know-how to Sandra on how she could make it even higher .

Design

In the press release of HCK-Filmproduktion (4/2002), the film editor Babette Rodin writes about the films by Conradsen and Köster (here in particular (an excerpt) about Who says has more from life ):

... The film only uses the Cinema direct style and arranges the created scenes on a suitable philharmonic sound carpet that not only underlines or accompanies the sequences. He reports soberly from the depths of the fun society, about the often sour existence of the show-offs, but also expresses the joy of life that results from showing off through the image and music composition. He does not exhibit his protagonists in a school-mastering manner, does not document them as phenomena typical of the time, but allows the real people to emerge behind the pretended facade ...

criticism

Benjamin Henrichs wrote about the film in the Süddeutsche Zeitung (excerpt):

… Sandra is a beautiful child - and she knows it, and for the time being the joy about it is greater than the sadness about the first defeat. She has already been Miss Arabella and Miss Germany , and now her great career as a model should really begin. 'But there is a problem,' says her unemployed father, and he doesn't know why it is a problem, he only knows one thing for sure: It's not because of Sandra. But he takes the whole thing in a more sporty way. While Sandra's mother, much smaller than the daughter and much rounder, is already being washed over by the first waves of panic. Breathing hard and strangled by maternal concern, she sits in the oppressively comfortable living room. Tells how much faith, love, hope (and money) you have already invested in Sandra's rise: One year of running school, for example - which is why Sandra now moves even more beautifully than the other beautiful women in the world. If only the world would finally see that too! ... This is a very nice film, about very nice people. The viewer can find this touching or frightening. And how he thinks it certainly depends on whether he is running after happiness himself. Or rather not. Because of course the four good soldiers of fortune are also funny characters. Fortunately, they are still boldly on the move - instead of making themselves comfortable with their misfortune at home in the corner ... And without even realizing it, they have discovered the magic formula for the TV age. In the long gone times, when the state theater still ruled over culture, we heard the witches in Macbeth : 'Beautiful is ugly, ugly is beautiful'. And this is what the singing from the TV boxes sounds like today: 'Geil is embarrassing, embarrassingly cool'. And that is probably the reason why Sandra, Alina, Yana and Rainer cannot become the big winners. They are just too nice, too innocent, too innocent to be really embarrassing, really horny ...
