Work of Faith Propagation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pontifical Work for Propagating the Faith is a missionary organization of the Pontifical Mission Societies of the Catholic Church.

history

The basic idea goes back to Pauline Marie Jaricot , who founded a national missionary association in Lyon in 1819 , which on May 3, 1822 became the internationally oriented "work of the propagation of the faith" (French Société pour la Propagation de la foi ). Members pledged to offer a prayer daily and to give a sou a week . The association quickly spread to Savoy , Piedmont , Switzerland (1827), the Netherlands (1830) and other countries. The association received papal confirmation on August 15, 1840 and was repeatedly recommended by the popes.

Since the association was only run by French , independent national organizations were formed in the individual countries. The Leopoldinenstiftung was established in Austria in 1829 . In Germany, the Franziskus-Xaverius-Missionsverein was established in 1834 and the Ludwig-Missionsverein in 1839 , which were incorporated into the “Papal Work for Propagating the Faith” in 1922 and today operate as missio - International Catholic Missionswerk .

On May 3, 1922, Pope Pius XI. the headquarters from Lyon to Rome and gave the association the name Opus Pontificium a propagatione fidei ("Papal work of the spread of the faith").

The president is the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .

Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 appointed Timoteo Lehane SVD (* 1955) as the new general secretary of the “Papal Work for the Propaganda of the Faith” ( Propaganda Fides ).
