Werner Greiling

Werner Greiling (* 1954 in Neustadt an der Orla ) is a German historian .

Life

Greiling studied history and German literature from 1975 to 1980 at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In 1984 he received his doctorate with a thesis on Karl August Varnhagen von Ense (1785–1858) and in 1996 his habilitation . In 1991/92 he was a research fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the Max Planck Institute for History in Göttingen, in 1993 DAAD research fellow at the Center National de la Recherche Scientifique (ITEM) in Paris and in 1993 / 94 Scholarship holder at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich.

From 1999 to 2001 Greiling was a substitute professor at the University of Leipzig . Since 2004 he has been an adjunct professor for modern history at the Historical Institute of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. From 2001 to 2010 he was a sub-project leader in the special research area “Weimar-Jena. Culture around 1800 ”. Together with Uwe Schirmer , from 2013 to 2018 he headed the third-party funded project “Thuringia in the Century of the Reformation” at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.

Greiling's research focuses on communication, media and cultural history, the Thuringian and Saxon regional history, German-French cultural transfer and the social history of the Enlightenment .

Greiling has been chairman of the Historical Commission for Thuringia eV since 2006 and a full member of the Academy of Non-Profit Science in Erfurt since 2012 . He is also a member of the historical commissions for Hesse , Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt . Since 1995 he has been chairman of the Friends' Association for City History in Neustadt an der Orla . Greiling is also active in local politics and has been a member of the city council of Neustadt an der Orla since 1999 for the “Bündnis für Neustadt”. In May 2019 he was also elected an honorary member of the city council.
