Werner Jarowinsky (born April 25, 1927 in Leningrad , † October 22, 1990 in Berlin ) was a politician ( SED ) of the GDR . He was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED .

Life

Jarowinsky was the son of a worker who worked in the Soviet Union. After the death of their father, the Jarowinskys family returned to Germany in the 1930s. Jarowinsky attended elementary school and trained as an industrial clerk from 1941 to 1943. During the Second World War he did military service in the Wehrmacht until 1945 .

After the war he joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in 1945 and the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1946. He became a youth functionary in Zeitz and was employed by the People's Police . At the same time he graduated from the preparatory college in Halle (Saale) and passed the Abitur in 1947. From 1948 to 1951 he studied economics and law at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1951 to 1956 he was a lecturer at the Humboldt University. In 1956 he received his doctorate at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Leipzig with the thesis "The functions of planning socialist trade in the German Democratic Republic and the basics of state retail sales planning" .

In 1956 he became head of the research institute for internal trade in East Berlin and in 1957 head of a main administration in the Ministry of Trade and Supply of the GDR. From 1959 he was Deputy Minister for Industrial Goods and from February 1961 to October 1963 State Secretary and First Deputy Minister for Trade and Supply (successor to Franz Fillinger ). In January 1963 he was on the VI. SED party congress elected member of the Central Committee and candidate of the Politburo. On November 1, 1963, he was elected Secretary of the Central Committee of the SED with responsibility for trade and supplies, and later also for church issues. From May 1984 to December 1989 he was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED. From 1963 to 1990 he was a member of the SED parliamentary group of the People's Chamber and from 1971 to 1989 he was chairman of the committee for trade and supply.

In the late 1980s, Jarowinsky was also a GDR representative in the Prague editorial team of the Moscow-led world communist movement Problems of Peace and Socialism . He strongly opposed the change in the magazine to glasnost , pluralism and freedom of expression called for by his Soviet colleagues .

In November 1989 he became deputy president of the People's Chamber and chairman of the SED and SED- PDS faction. On January 10, 1990, he resigned from the People's Chamber and was expelled from the SED-PDS on January 20.

Jarowinsky was awarded the Karl Marx Order in 1977 and 1987 .
