Werner Ries

Werner Ries (born March 20, 1921 in Nuremberg ; † May 26, 2007 in Leipzig ) was a German internist and gerontologist .

Career

Ries studied medicine in Würzburg and Leipzig . He received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1945 . He then completed specialist training in internal medicine at the Medical University Clinic in Leipzig. His habilitation took place in Leipzig in 1956.

Ries worked under Max Bürger , whose pupil he was. In 1969 Ries was appointed full professor for internal medicine / gerontology. He got the first German chair for gerontology. Ries was a co-founder of the Gerontology Working and Research Association in Leipzig in 1965 , which became the Society for Aging Research of the GDR that same year . From 1966 to 1969 Ries was the company's first chairman. In 1977 Ries became a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . After the reunification and the merger of the two gerontological-geriatric societies to form the German Society for Gerontology and Geriatrics (DGGG), Ries was Vice President of the association from 1992 to 1997.

In 1991 and 1992 Ries was appointed to the Expert Commission on Elderly Report of the Federal Ministry for Family and Senior Citizens.

Work and honors

Werner Ries wrote 11 monographs , 17 book chapters and was author or co-author of around 225 original works.

He was an honorary member of the German Society for Gerontology and Geriatrics, the All Union Society for Gerontology of the USSR, the Nutrition Section of the Academy of Sciences of Bulgaria and the Saxon Society for Internal Medicine. In 1977 he was accepted as a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .

Ries was awarded the Theodor Brugsch Medal of the GDR Medical and Scientific Societies in 1980, the Hufeland Gold Medal in 1983, the Max Bürger Medal of the Society for Internal Medicine of the GDR in 1986, and the Fritz Verzir Medal of the European Biological Section of 1990 International Association of Gerontology and in 1993 the Dr. Fritz Buch Prize for Aging Research awarded. In the GDR he received the title of medical councilor and senior medical officer . In 1996 Ries was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .
