Werner Schweikert (born January 26, 1933 in Böckingen ; † March 8, 2005 in Flein ) was a German entrepreneur, book collector and bibliographer who appeared in German translations in particular with bibliographies on world literature .

Life

Schweikert was the owner of a furnace and ventilation construction company in Flein . Since early youth he had put together a library of world literature . In 1968 he already owned 10,000 books, almost all of which were destroyed by water damage. After a new start of the collection, it finally comprised over 100,000 volumes in specially prepared rooms of his installation company.

Schweikert has not only published about himself and his passion for collecting, but also gained importance through the publication of the bibliography of 20th century Hungarian literature in German by the Werner Schweikert publishing house, which he founded in 1999 . In 2001 he was awarded the Pro Cultura Hungarica medal by the Hungarian Ministry of National Cultural Heritage for this bibliography . He also worked on an extensive bibliography of Russian literature in German translation, of which, however, only the first part appeared with works from 1880 to 1965, while the second part could no longer appear due to the death of the author. Other bibliographic works appeared in his publishing house, including those on Rudolf Schlichter's work .

Schweikert was buried in Flein. His autobiographical notes, which remained unpublished during his lifetime, were published posthumously, enriched with memories from friends and relatives. His book collection came into the holdings of the Museum Würth .

In 2004 he received the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit .
