Werner Stackebrandt (* 1948 ) is a German geologist and former state geologist from Brandenburg.

Stackebrandt studied geology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald with a diploma in 1974 and a diploma thesis on the fissure conditions in the highlands of Hiddensee . Then he was at the Central Institute for Earth Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Potsdam . He dealt there mainly with the northeast German basin . In 1983 he received his doctorate (contributions to the tectonic analysis of selected fracture zones of the subhercyneal depression and adjacent areas (erection zone, Flechtinger plaice)). From the 1980s he was also active in polar research, which he continued after the fall of the Berlin Wall at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources . Overall, he was four times on field trips in the Antarctic (geological mapping, ice dynamics, quaternary landscape shaping) and once in Spitsbergen . In 1992 he went to the State Office for Geosciences and Natural Resources of Brandenburg in Kleinmachnow , which he helped to set up. From 1996 to 2004, when it merged with the State Mining Authority, he was its director. After that he was Vice President of what is now the State Office for Mining, Geology and Raw Materials in Cottbus . After his retirement he has his own geological consulting office.

He was instrumental in the union of the German Geological Society with the Society for Geological Sciences (GGW) of the GDR, of which he was President, which was carried out in 2004.

In 2013 he received the Serge von Bubnoff Medal .
