Werner Vogt (born May 31, 1931 in Vienna ; † May 14, 2020 ) was an Austrian author , historian and local researcher from Vorarlberg .

Life

Werner Vogt was born as the son of Ludwig Ernst Vogt (* 1895 in Bregenz; † October 8, 1956) and Hildegard (* Stummer on January 9, 1901; † 1984). The family comes from Riefensberg . The grandfather (1839–1933) worked a. a. until his retirement in 1919 with the Vorarlberg power plants , which is why the family moved to Bregenz .

Werner Vogt attended primary school in Vienna from 1937 to 1941, secondary school in Amstetten from 1941 to 1944 and briefly in Bregenz in 1944.

From October 8, 1955, he was married to Herma Katharina (* Ober on April 2, 1935) and the marriage resulted in five girls. He lived in Hard in Vorarlberg.

For many years since 1947 he was an alpine climber and a member of the Austrian Alpine Club .

Professional activities

Werner Vogt began his professional career in 1945 with an apprenticeship with civil geometer Arnold Fussenegger in Bregenz until 1948. He also attended the surveying school in Rotholz im Zillertal (1949) for half a year .

On August 1, 1949, he was employed by the Vorarlberg state government in the state hydraulic engineering department and retired in this department on July 1, 1991. In 1957 it was made pragmatic .

From 1975 to 2005 Werner Vogt was a member and spokesman for the Vorarlberg Nomenclature Commission, which provided further reports on the designation and spelling of locations in Vorarlberg.

Werner Vogt is an autodidact historian and has been involved in local research with a focus on field names and local history for decades and has written a large number of books, articles in specialist journals, held excursions and lectures and has thus become known beyond the boundaries of researching field names .

In 1965 he started field name research, where he u. a. at the beginning was supported by Josef Zehrer. As part of field name commissions, Vogt was active in Vorarlberg in an advisory capacity at the state and municipal level until 1995. He recorded the field names in all 96 Vorarlberg municipalities and published them in a nine-volume work (see: Vorarlberger Field Name Book ). In order to be able to interpret the field names correctly, he taught himself Romansh . Werner Vogt's Vorarlberg field name book was included in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Austrian Commission for UNESCO on March 16, 2011 .

He also built up the Bregenzerwald Archive in cooperation with the Egg home care association and was involved in the creation and maintenance of a large number of home history books or books about the Alps, etc. editorially and / or as an author of local history writings in 21 communities.

Vogt was a long-time member of the Vorarlberger Landesmuseumsverein , with which he carried out intensive regional research in collaboration with the then President Edwin Oberhauser . Various publications date from this period, including the Vorarlberg field names book .

  • March 19, 2014 Werner Vogt was awarded the professional title of “Professor” after appointment by Federal President Heinz Fischer by the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture;

  • December 1, 1990 Award of the great honorary badge of the Leopold-Franzens-University in Innsbruck for the special services to the research of the Romance names in Vorarlberg, South and West Tyrol;
  • October 10, 1989 Badge of Merit of the State of Vorarlberg for collecting and recording field names in Vorarlberg;

Trivia

Together with his wife Herma, Werner Vogt issued and sold a support postcard during the avalanche winter of 1954 in Blons in the Große Walsertal in order to be able to support the victims of the avalanche catastrophe financially.
