Weser Bridge (Höxter)

As a city bridge, the Weser Bridge in Höxter connects the old town of Höxter with Lower Saxony . Since Höxter was founded, a bridge has played an important role in the same place in trade and traffic.

location

Höxter's Weser Bridge connects the southeastern city center with the Brückfeld. From the old town it is part of the state road 755 (Fürstenberger Straße), the branches of which lead southwards via the Lower Saxony state road 549/550 (Bahnhofstraße) to Boffzen and as L 549 to Neuhaus im Solling and as state road 550 to Fürstenberg (Weser) . The Lower Saxony state road 550 (Holzmindener Strasse) leads northwards, east of the Höxteran district of Lüchtringen and to Holzminden . The Altenbeken – Kreiensen railway line , which runs along Höxter between the old town and the Weser , also crosses the L 755 at the level of the Weser bridge near the Höxter – Rathaus stop.

description

Today's bridge is a slightly arched frame bridge in prestressed concrete built between 1954 and 1956 , with a central pillar that divides it into two halves, the left half of which spans the Weser and the right half of the foreland. It is 165 m long and 13.30 m wide. Your central pillar has bugförmige Stems both sides to assist in flood with a strong current the flotsam and at the same time when ice conditions as icebreakers to offer the ice floes little attack surface of the pillar. These should also slow down the flow as little as possible by reducing turbulence in the water.

history

The location of this bridge on the foreland of the Brückfeld is historically one of the most important places in Höxter, which, thanks to its location on both banks of the Weser, has almost flood-free access. Presumably a long time ago there was a crossing with a ferry or a wooden bridge, where the Hellweg , which led from the Rhine to the Elbe, crossed with the Weser. The Roman general Drusus has probably already crossed the Weser several times in his campaigns against the Teutons and later also Charlemagne in the Saxon Wars .

The economic importance of Höxter increased with the founding of Corvey Abbey . In 1249 Abbot Hermann I von Holte gave the citizens of Höxter permission to build a new bridge . The bridge market was located near the historic Höxter town hall . This bridge consisted of three stone yokes, which were secured by gate towers, and a central structure that could be dismantled in winter when there was ice and danger. It survived several times partial destruction by floods, wars and also the Thirty Years War .

When during the Dutch War , in 1673, the then Bishop of Münster , Christoph Bernhard von Galen , who was also the administrator of the Corvey Monastery , allied himself with Louis XIV , the King of France, the final destruction took place in November of the same year the bridge by the French commander de Fougeraies. Only three individual sheets remained. The city could no longer afford to rebuild and traffic has since been maintained by a ferry. It was not until the Prussian state that the bridge could be rebuilt in 1831. It again served the west and east connection. Along with industrialization, steamship traffic also increased on the Weser. That made structural changes and in 1895 a new bridge necessary. A new building followed in 1932 and belonged to Reichsstrasse 64. Before the end of the Second World War , the bridge was blown up by German troops on April 7, 1945 on their retreat. An emergency bridge was built, which was in operation until the new bridge was opened in 1955. From 1973 a new bridge was built near Lüchtringen with a bypass road of the K 46, which leads over it and since then has relieved the old town of Höxter from traffic, see Weser Bridge (Lüchtringen) .

Since June 23, 2016, the Weser Bridge has been closed to vehicles over 3.5 tons due to extensive damage to the concrete deck and is being checked by an engineering office together with the State Office for Road Construction North Rhine-Westphalia for the exact extent of damage to the bridge. A full closure with the exception of pedestrians was planned from mid-September 2016.
