Westenhellweg (natural area)

The Westenhellweg in the south of Hernes

The Weste (r) nhellweg is a natural spatial main unit on the southern edge of the main unit group of the Westphalian Bight in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is the western continuation of the Hellwegbörden and includes the area around the old Hellweg cities of Essen and Bochum .

The soil in the area of the Westenhellweg is characterized by rich loess surfaces .

Location and limits

The Westenhellweg is the western continuation of the Hellwegbörden and mainly includes the area around the old Hellweg cities of Essen and Bochum - except for their south. The cities of Dortmund , Castrop-Rauxel , Herne , Gelsenkirchen and - with very little area - Oberhausen also have a share in the natural area . The Hanseatic City of Duisburg, located on the historic Hellweg, is already in the Lower Rhine Plain. The intersection of the Niederbergisches Land, the Lower Rhine Plain and the Westenhellweg is Broich Castle , located directly at the historic ford of the Hellweg over the Ruhr in Mülheim an der Ruhr , which means that almost half of the area of Mülheim can be attributed to the natural area of the Westenhellweg.

Natural structure

The Westenhellweg natural area was first defined in the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany from the 1950s. In the following individual sheets 1: 200,000 Münster (1960), Düsseldorf / Erkelenz (1963), Arnsberg (1969) and Kleve / Wesel (1977), the boundaries were revised again and the natural area was divided into sub-natural areas; only sheet Düsseldorf / Erkelenz shows no fine subdivision. This defines the following sub-natural spaces:

  • (to 54 Westphalian Bay )
    • 545 Westenhellweg
      • 545.0 Castrop plate (s)
        • 545.00 Marten flat wave country
        • 545.01 Castroper heights , at the stockpile Schwerin 151  m , on Schweriner annular well 135  m ; natural elevations over 130  m
        • 545.02 Langendreerer depression
      • 545.1 Stockumer Höhe , on Steinberg southwest of Stockum 177.1  m
      • 545.2 Unterer Westenhellweg
        • 545.20 Ückendorf-Rauxeler Platten
        • 545.21 Bochum loess plate

Since the sheet of Düsseldorf / Erkelenz does not subdivide the unit further with the cities of Essen (far to the west) and Bochum (from Wattenscheid to the core city to Langendreer ), there is no official natural space name for the landscape around Essen and the gravel mountains between Essen and Wattenscheid ( Mechtenberg south of Rotthausen : 80.3  m ; Auf m Silldgen south-west of (Essen-) Leithe : 111.2  m ).

Adjacent natural areas

To the north, the Emscherland joins the Westenhellweg . In the south it borders on the Bergisches Land and the Märkische part of the Sauerland . It is continued to the east in the Hellwegbörden ; in the west it borders on the Lower Rhine Plain .

Individual evidence

  1. Map services of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation ( information ) - Map service "Protected areas" shows the boundaries of the main unit group ("Natural areas") and the main units, the somewhat coarser map service "Landscapes" divides the natural areas a little more finely.

  7. The papers Münster and Arnsberg use the singular, papers Kleve / Wesel the plural.
  8. On Blatt Münster (1960) the reference number 545.1 designates another unit Ardeyvorland , as its sub-unit with reference to (the at that time not yet published) sheet Arnsberg 545.10 as sub-natural area Stockumer Höhe .
This subdivision was given up on Blatt Arnsberg (1969), since the Witten-Hörder Mulde , the Stockumer Höhe and the Ardey Mountains , have now been added to the main unit Hellwegbörden .
