Falling weather in the high mountains

A sudden fall in the weather is a violent and, above all, sudden deterioration in the weather. A sudden sudden change in weather is often triggered by a cold front or strong thunderstorms . Often the visibility is suddenly reduced by heavy precipitation and fog , which is a great danger for mountaineers , especially in high mountains . In addition, there is a temperature drop of up to 10 ° C and strong winds with gusts of wind , which can lead to intense cooling and, in the worst case, death from hypothermia if you wear inappropriate clothing . Experts reckon with around one or two sudden falls per month in midsummer.

Falling weather or temperature in winter can be the beginning of a cold spell . A well-known such fall was z. B. the one at the beginning of the snow catastrophe in northern Germany in 1978 , which also sets the record values for the drop in temperature from one day to the next at many weather stations.
