The Almanack is made up of articles, lists, and tables covering a wide variety of topics, such as education and government related to health, social spending, and the environment . The largest sections are: the land directory, which includes recent history , politics , economic information, and cultural reviews. The astronomical data covering the year ahead is also extensive. Whitaker's Almanack is not an encyclopedia , but rather a yearbook of contemporary affairs and the directory of the various institutions in Britain (such as clubs, institutions at risk and universities). Winston Churchill personally took an interest in the book's continued publication.

Every year Whitaker's Almanack is printed in two formats: the standard and an abridged edition. Both editions were redesigned in 1993 and 2004 to increase page size and improve legibility.

The current editor-in-chief of the Whitakers Almanack is Claire Fogg.
