Good Friday procession in Wiedenbrück: At the corner of Lange Str./Mönchstr.

As Wiedenbrücker Cross costume is a Good Friday procession in Wiedenbrück , a district of Rheda-Wiedenbrück , referred in East Westphalia. In the costume of the cross, a pious exercise , a procession passes through the old town of Wiedenbrück, imitating the Way of the Cross of Jesus Christ to the place of execution in Golgotha .

history

The cross costume was brought to Wiedenbrück in 1663 by the Franciscans , who have had a convent in Wiedenbrück since 1644 . Since then, it has been carried out by them with only a few interruptions (including during the Second World War).

Traditionally, the performers and their motives for participating in the procession are known only to a few people in the monastery. It is presumed that at least in earlier times people also carried the cross on themselves who wanted to pay off a personal debt with it. In this context, rumors have persisted until recently that the cross-bearers occasionally include former prisoners who want to repent .

Recently, members of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch , who have formed a parish in Wiedenbrück for more than a decade, have also taken part in the procession. With chants from the Orthodox liturgy, girls and boys of the community create a station of the procession.

The Cross and the Good Friday Liturgy

At the Reckenberg

The procession is part of the liturgy of the Triduum Sacrum in Wiedenbrück . On Good Friday in the early afternoon in the Franciscan monastery church, the celebration of the passion and death of Christ begins . Part of this celebration is, among other things, the recitation of the Passion from the Gospel according to John . This pericope , read with divided roles, deals with the traditional interrogation of Jesus by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate ( Jn 18.1-19.42  EU ). Pilate had Jesus scourged by the soldiers, who mocked him as "King of the Jews", dressed him in a purple robe and "crowned" him with a crown of thorns. The interrogation ends with the surrender of Jesus to the Sanhedrin . According to tradition, this is followed by Jesus' Way of the Cross through Jerusalem to Golgotha. This is modeled on the cross costume. ( Joh 19-16-28  EU ).

After the procession, the other components of the Good Friday liturgy follow both in the monastery church and in the nearby St. Aegidius parish church .

Schedule and processional route

Good Friday procession in Wiedenbrück: Historic route through the city center
  • 1:00 p.m .: Beginning of the liturgy of the passion and death of Christ
  • approx. 1:30 p.m .: Moving out of the cross costume from the Marienkirche starting at the monastery church at the intersection of Mönch- / Wasserstraße and Rietberger Straße
  • approx. 2:30 p.m. Continuation of the liturgy of the passion and death of Christ in the Marienkirche

Deviating from the above plan, the members of the choir, to which newcomers are welcome, begin the rehearsal of the chants for the procession at 12:45 in the parish hall of the parish of St. Aegidius. The processional path runs through the old town of Wiedenbrück. Through the participation of the Syrian Orthodox Christians (see story ), it has occasionally experienced a change in recent years in order to include the community center of the partner community, which is located slightly outside the city center.

Order of participants

Despite the long tradition of the procession, there were always changes in the order of the participating groups. She is currently roaming the streets of Wiedenbrück in the following order:

  • Altar boy
  • Choir of the community
  • Actors of Jesus and Simons of Cyrene, accompanied by the Franciscans and seven men from the parish traditionally dressed in black. They hold a staff with a black ribbon . Simon of Cyrene is not mentioned in the pericope according to John, but in Mt 27.32  EU .
  • Group of children in simple costumes with tools of suffering and saying banners. The group of children symbolize the people and the soldiers at the crucifixion. The banners show biblical passages from the crucifixion pericopes, such as “His blood come on us and our children!” ( Mt 27.25  EU ) or “Crucify him!” ( John 19.15  EU ).
  • other altar boys

Choral music

Long street

A choir, consisting of singers from the church choir of the parish of St. Aegidius, Wiedenbrück, the neighboring parishes, the men's choir "Hope", accompanies the procession with chants such as improperia and the Stabat mater . The sung litany Father of the Heavenly Throne comes from the Düsseldorf Jesuit hymn book Spiritual Exercises for the Holy Mission from 1759 :

V: Father of the Heavenly Throne
A: Look at us, have mercy.
V: Jesus Christ the Son of God
A: Look at us, have mercy.
V: Spirit, you source of holiness
A: Look at us, have mercy.
V: Most Holy Trinity
A: Look at us, have mercy.
1. V: Jesus,
A: Jesus,
V: you came to the father's will
for us to meet dying.
A: Have mercy, have mercy
we beg through your pain
give repentance to our hearts.
3rd V: Jesus,
A: Jesus,
V: whom you wear for ridicule and scorn
Purple, reed and crown of thorns.
A: Have mercy, have mercy
we beg through your pain
give repentance to our hearts.
2. V: Jesus,
A: Jesus,
V: who you bleeding full of wounds
standing tied to the column.
A: Have mercy, have mercy
we beg through your pain
give repentance to our hearts.
4. V: Jesus,
A: Jesus,
V: which you wrongly, unheard
will be declared guilty of death.
A: Have mercy, have mercy
we beg through your pain
give repentance to our hearts.

The following is also sung:

Hail the holy cross,
on whom my God has atoned
at which my desire
my Savior has hanged.
Notation of the call O crux

During the seven falls of Jesus under the cross, the male voices voice the cry O crux, ave, spes . This is part of the hymn Vexilla regis , written around 600 , of Venantius Fortunatus and is repeated three times in increasing pitch. A notation of the reputation was included in the diocesan portion of the praise of God for the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
