The Wiener Straße is a major thoroughfare in the borough Schwechat . It is a state road B and part of the Budapest road B10 .

location

Wiener Straße runs in continuation of Bruck-Hainburger Straße from the center of Schwechat at Hauptplatz in the east to the city limits to Vienna in the west, where it continues on Simmeringer Hauptstraße . It crosses the Kalten Gang and the Schwechat in order to subsequently cross the Kleinschendung district in a north-westerly direction. The border with Vienna, which is identical to the tracks of the railway to Wolfsthal , the former Pressburg railway , is crossed by an underpass.

traffic

Wiener Straße is one of the most important traffic routes in Schwechat. It establishes the connection with Vienna and is the historical traffic axis of Kleinschwichat . Via Wiener Straße you can then get from Vienna to Vienna Airport , Hainburg an der Donau and Bruck an der Leitha or Hungary. The heavy car traffic could only be reduced through the creation of the Ost Autobahn and the Vienna outer ring expressway S1 on Wiener Straße. Since it is a historical traffic route, the course and the building line of Wiener Straße is irregular. The road has cycle lanes in both directions. Numerous public means of transport open up Wiener Straße. The Wiener lines perform the bus line 71A of Kaiserebersdorf or from Zentralfriedhof (terminal stations of the tram lines 6 and 71, respectively) on the Wiener Straße to Schwechat. The S-Bahn line S7 has the stop Wien Kaiserebersdorf (formerly Klein Schwechat ) on the city limits between Vienna and Schwechat . Several bus routes operate on Wiener Straße within Schwechat.

Building

The original village development on Wiener Straße with single-storey houses is only partially preserved. Most of the buildings are three-story, date from the end of the 19th century and were changed and adapted after 1945, mostly through shops. This continuous construction extends to Dreherstrasse and Mautner-Markhof-Strasse. The further stretch of road to the Vienna border is determined by the underpass of the main lanes, next to which there are secondary lanes to the right and left that end in front of the railway tracks and allow access to some buildings. The Schwechat brewery is located on the left side of the street . In the middle of the street there is a modern shopping center with a stepped fountain, as well as other buildings erected after 1945 (e.g. police headquarters, Volksbank).

No. 3 community center

The inconspicuous two-storey town house with basket arch portal and vaulted entrance from around 1800 essentially dates from the 17th century. In the courtyard there are still windows with grooved sills from the 17th century.

Bridge over the Schwechat

In front of the bridge over the Schwechat there is a baroque wayside shrine depicting the Holy Trinity on the right . On the left side, already belonging to the Rathauspark, there is a statue of St. John Nepomuk on the promenade on a curved heraldic base from the middle of the 18th century.

No. 10 mosaics

On the house wall of the modern residential building facing Schwechat there are 4 large-format mosaic pictures with equestrian representations.

No. 18 Trinity Church

The former Capuchin Church was built shortly before 1700. After devastation during the French Wars , the Capuchin monastery was closed and the church was repaired again, with parts of the previous Kleinschwachat church of Maria am Anger being transferred here. Since then, the church has also been called the Church of Our Lady. The Dreifaltigkeitskirche has been a branch church of the Schwechat parish since 1815. The church tower was built in the 19th century. "Since 1998 there has been an Ethiopian Orthodox congregation in Austria , which celebrates its services in Schwechat (Dreifaltigkeitskirche, Wiener Str. 18)." ( Ecumenical Council of Churches in Austria : Ethiopian Orthodox Church is a new ÖRKÖ member ) a Serbian cultural and sports club in the extension of the church.

No. 19 house

The two-storey house from the 2nd half of the 18th century, the facade of which has been renovated, has a hipped roof and a basket-arch portal on the street side. The groin vaulted hallway and the partly vaulted rooms on the ground floor date from around 1600.

No. 21 inn

The inn with the heavily modified seven-axis facade has a house sign from the 2nd half of the 18th century.

No. 29 residential building

The two-storey late-historic house with neo-baroque facade decor has a distinctive central bay window. On the building there is a memorial plaque for the Schwechat painter Anton Schrödl , who was born in the previous building in 1820 , with his portrait relief.

The Golden Cross Inn

No. 39 Gasthof Zum golden Kreuz

The inn consists of a single-storey U-shaped complex from the 2nd half of the 18th century, which was built over an older building. The street wing has a central gable, late baroque window baskets and a wrought-iron house sign. Around the corner in Kranichgasse there is a sloping basket arch portal with a curved crown and vases, which is dated 1773. This house still has the most of the village character that originally shaped the building on Wiener Straße.

No. 49 residential building

The strictly historical corner house with its twelve-axis facade and the centered central axis was built around 1870-1880.

Forced laborer memorial

After the large intersection with Dreherstrasse and Mautner-Markhof-Strasse , coming from Vienna at the entrance to Schwechat, there is a large-format monument in a green area for the slave laborers who had to work in Schwechat during the Second World War.

On the left side of the street, at Mautner-Markhof-Straße 13, follows the premises of the Schwechat brewery with a beer restaurant and the brewery museum, in front of which there is a historic brewery locomotive with a trailer.
