"Castle" at the wildlife park (north view)

The wildlife park is located on the summit of 562  m above sea level. NHN high Potzberg , which belongs to the district of Föckelberg ( Kusel district ). It is reached via a road that was expanded in 1964/65. The area is connected to national traffic via the nearby Autobahn 62 ( Nonnweiler - Landstuhl , junction 7  Kusel or 8  Glan-Münchweiler ). The federal highways 420 and 423 as well as the state  highways 367 and 364 are available on a small scale .

Adjacent to the park on the summit of the Potzberg are two towers and an ensemble of buildings called the “castle” because it is reminiscent of a knight's castle . However, it was only built as a hotel in the second half of the 20th century.

About 5 km from Potzberg, on the route of the former Glantalbahn , excursion services with railroad trolleys are offered between Altenglan and Staudernheim .

The initially 25 and now around 30 hectare facility is divided by 10,000 m of fencing. The number of birds of prey kept in aviaries rose from 50 (in 2002) to 70 (2003) to 120 in 2010.

In addition, the park is home to extensive and beneficial to the landscape embedded enclosures larger mammals, as bison , regrown aurochs , Highland cattle , Waldtarpane , Przewalski's horses , wild pigs , pot-bellied pigs , red , fallow deer , sika deer and reindeer , and marmots , ibex , chamois and moose . An educational forest trail provides general knowledge about animals and plants. The central feeding system with the visitors' gallery consists entirely of wood; In 1985 it was awarded the Rhineland-Palatinate Timber Construction Prize for its environmentally friendly and landscaped design .

In addition to a playground, there is also a petting zoo with goats , rabbits , peacocks , storks and geese for children .

The hut zum Adlerblick , a log house built from light-colored tree trunks with two terraces in front, of which the upper one is partly under the canopy, houses the catering trade.

history

The first efforts of the Kusel district to establish the wildlife park had already been made in 1972, when such an institution was recommended in a tourism report in order to promote tourism in the structurally weak region . The park was opened in September 1984 after more than ten years of planning and four years of construction. The institution is supported by the association founded in 1978 for the establishment and operation of a leisure facility with a game reserve on the Potzberg , which leased the park to a private company in December 1997. It was taken over by the current operator in 1998.

In 2008, two reindeer in the wildlife park died because they were improperly fed by park visitors. From August 2011 to January 2012, Natalie cow elk made regional headlines. A summer thunderstorm had uprooted a tree which, when it fell, damaged the fence of the elk enclosure so much that the elk cow could climb over it and leave the park area. Although she was seen repeatedly in the surrounding forests, all attempts to catch it failed. The wildlife park administration finally opted for food with the park gate open at night, and on January 12 the cow elk returned voluntarily.
