Wilfrido Vargas

Wilfrido Radamés Vargas Martínez (born April 24, 1949 in Altamira ) is a Dominican band leader, trumpeter, singer and composer who is best known as a merengue musician .

Vargas attended music school in his hometown from the age of ten and led his first band as a solo trumpeter when he was twelve. In 1972 he founded the group Los Beduinos in Santo Domingo , whose first album Wilfrido Vargas y sus Beduinos was released as the first of seventeen albums in 1974 on the Karen label . Some of the compositions came from Sonny Ovalle . Punto y Aparte had international success with the single El Barbarazoí .

In the early 1980s a duo album was released with the Beduino singer Sandy Reyes . In 1989 he moved to the Sonotone label , which released five albums, including the 1991 Grammy- nominated animation . In 1992 he was a guest star at the Festival de Viña del Mar , where he was awarded the Premio Gaviota de Plata , and performed at the Auditorio Simón Bolívar in Sao Paulo.

In 1993 he took part in the Festival de Acapulco in Mexico. In 1994 he was elected Gran Mariscal de los Carnavales de Barranquilla and received the Order of Heráldica de Cristobal Colón with the rank of Caballero from the Dominican government .
