August Wilhelm Amberg (born February 25, 1822 in Berlin ; † September 8, 1899 there ) was a German genre painter .

Life

Wilhelm Amberg studied at the Berlin Art Academy under Wilhelm Herbig . From 1839 to 1842 he worked in the studio of Carl Joseph Begas . In the spring of 1844 he went to Paris to continue his studies in Léon Cogniet's studio . He traveled to Italy until 1847 , was in Rome , Venice and Naples , and finally settled in Berlin.

Amberg devoted himself almost exclusively to the genre , both the cheerful and the serious. His topics were always pleasant and corresponded to the taste of the time. His work was often printed in magazines such as Die Gartenlaube or “Über Land und Meer” . With the exception of an early religious work for the Gertraudenkirche in Berlin and some landscapes, Amberg limited himself almost exclusively to narrative topics. His paintings were characterized by harmonious coloring, intimacy of feeling and poetic charm.

Of those of the serious genre, his Consolation in Tones and The Widow's Consolation should be emphasized , of the cheerful Die Liebespost, The Smoking Maid, Naschkitty and reading from Goethe's “Werther” (a major work from 1870 in the collection of the Berlin National Gallery). The slightly sentimental picture “Der Abschied”, apparently from the Werther period, dates from 1897 and was shown by Amberg a year later at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .

Wilhelm Amberg has received numerous awards and from 1886 was a member of the Senate of the Prussian Academy of Arts , Berlin.
