Wilhelm August Hammond-Norden (pseudonym: Erna Michel and others; born March 3, 1906 in Hamburg ; missing since the Battle of Stalingrad , declared dead in 1955) was a German writer and cabaret artist .

Live and act

Wilhelm Hammond-Norden was the eldest of four sons of Heinrich Hammond-Norden and his wife Hedwig, née Schübel, who came from Schwarzenbach an der Saale . Like the generations before him, his father worked as a stonemason. He managed HL Norden & Sohn, which was based in Hammerbrook and employed up to 200 people. Since Wilhelm Hammond-Norden was the eldest son, he was to take over the business as his father's successor. Therefore, after graduating from high school, he trained as a stonemason at Zeidler & Wimmel in Berlin, which was considered a respected natural stone company. He then returned to his hometown and passed the master craftsman examination in his father's company.

Wilhelm Hammond-Norden was not particularly interested in the profession of stonemason, but preferred theater, literature and cabaret. His friend and journalist Focko Thomas advised him to write poems, prose, theater reviews and parodies, which were printed in all the major Hamburg newspapers. Hammond-Norden wrote articles for the yearbooks of the Hamburg artist festivals and the magazine Der Kreis . At the “Bronzekeller” cabaret, where he had extremely successful appearances as a cabaret artist, he made the acquaintance of Wolfgang Borchert , who adored Hammond-Norden and took over some of his texts in his own repertoire. As a writer, Hammond-Norden wrote Der Zerr-Spiegel in 1937 , which contained parodies, and a year later the poetry book Sternschnuppen .

Hammond-Norden, who had two children with his wife Erna, who were born in 1934 and 1938, went to Hohwacht after the outbreak of World War II . Since September 1939 he had to do military service. Hammond-Norden went through basic training and was posted to France, where he directed the front theater. He was later used in combat on the Russian campaign and reached Stalingrad, where he was reported missing in the winter of 1943.

The company HL Norden & Sohn was taken over by a non-family stonemason after the end of the Second World War. Since the former owner had to be deleted from the commercial register for this, Wilhelm Hammond-Norden was declared dead in 1955 .

The tombstone of Erna Hammond-Norden, b. Michel (May 24, 1906 - January 6, 1979), who was created by her son Henning Hammond-Norden (* 1938), stands in the women's garden at the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg.
