Wilhelm Strahringer

Wilhelm Strahringer (born February 25, 1898 in Vienna , † December 28, 1982 in Darmstadt ) was an Austro-German engineer and local politician.

Life

Wilhelm Strahringer was born as the eldest son of a typesetter in 1898 in the Margareten district of Vienna . He attended elementary school from 1904 and then a secondary school. There he passed the final exam in July 1916. He studied mechanical engineering at the TH Vienna from 1916 to 1921 . He completed his studies in March 1921 with the diploma examination. Then he was a designer at Josef Kranz . The bank director, cartel president and military supplier Kranz was a well-known personality of the Jewish upper middle class in Vienna. He intended to build up a type machine production on the basis of an acquired license. After just one year, he sold the license to the Goebel machine factory in Darmstadt. Wilhelm Strahringer therefore went to Darmstadt in June 1921 and made a career at the Goebel company. He acquired German citizenship in 1932. From 1936 he was a senior construction engineer and from 1940 an authorized signatory at Goebel, under the direction of Wilhelm Köhler (entrepreneur) .

Strahringer joined the Social Democratic Party of Austria in 1916. As a student he was a member of the Socialist Student Union. He was involved in the organization of the 2nd Workers' Olympiad in Vienna in July 1931. For this he published a commemorative publication. In July 1932 he took on German citizenship.

In September 1945 he was appointed by Darmstadt's mayor Ludwig Metzger as a director on the board of directors of HEAG , of which he was a member until his departure in 1970. Under his leadership, HEAG developed into an important supra-regional power supply and local transport company.

From 1948 to 1968 Strahringer was a member of the SPD parliamentary group in the city council. For many years he was chairman of the building committee and helped shape the reconstruction of Darmstadt. He has also received many awards for his more than 40 honorary positions. Among other things, the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Strahringer was a member of numerous professional associations in the electricity industry at the state and federal level.

At Ernst Hueter's request , he had a teaching position at the TH Darmstadt from the winter semester 1947/48 to 1964 , which appointed him honorary professor in 1952.

Strahringer, who was also committed to art and literature, was a member of numerous associations and held numerous honorary posts. From 1950 to 1972 he was chairman of TSG Darmstadt. From 1954 to 1967 he was a member of the board of the German Academy for Language and Poetry , based in Darmstadt. From 1967 to 1972 he was a member of the board of trustees of this organization. In 1960 he was a founding member of the Gesellschaft Hessischer Literaturfreunde eV From 1961 to 1966 he was a member of the administrative board of the German Atomic Forum.

Wilhelm Strahringer died in Darmstadt in late 1982 at the age of 84. Strahringer had been married to the daughter of Heinrich Hubertus, chief engineer at HEAG, since 1931. The marriage gave birth to a son.
