Lieutenant General Wilhelm Graf von Hohenau

Georg Albrecht Wilhelm Graf von Hohenau (born April 25, 1854 in Albrechtsberg Castle near Dresden ; † October 28, 1930 in Bad Flinsberg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and cousin of Emperor Friedrich III.

Life

Wilhelm was a son of Prince Albrecht of Prussia (1809–1872), the youngest brother of Kaiser Wilhelm I , King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna , from his second morganatic marriage to Rosalie von Rauch (1820–1879) , Daughter of the Prussian Minister of War Gustav von Rauch and his second wife Rosalie, née von Holtzendorff . Because of his father's improper marriage, Wilhelm was not a member of the Hohenzollern family .

Hohenau became an officer, eventually lieutenant general , wing adjutant of Kaiser Wilhelm II and commander of the 1st Guard Cavalry Brigade . He was assigned to the Liebenberger Kreis and was involved in the Harden-Eulenburg affair . He was acquitted of the accusation of homosexuality in court, but Hohenau lost his military rank before the trials and was dismissed from the army.

After the death of his brother Friedrich in 1914, Hohenau moved into Albrechtsberg Castle, which he had to sell together with the property to the city of Dresden in 1925 due to gambling debts. He then lived in poor conditions at Bautzner Strasse 98 in Dresden.

After his death he was buried at the side of his mother and brother Friedrich in the Weißer Hirsch forest cemetery. The Dresden family grave of Count Hohenau was closed in 1968.

Graf Hohenau's nephew of the same name was the rider Wilhelm Graf von Hohenau (1884–1957), who was a bronze medalist in team show jumping at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm.

Hohenau was married twice. His first wife, Laura Freiin von Saurma von und zu der Jeltsch (1857-1884), daughter of Arthur Graf von Saurma von und zur Jeltsch and his wife Laura geb. Countess Henckel Freiin von Donnersmarck , he married on July 10, 1878 in Lorzendorf ; with her he had two daughters:

  • Elisabeth (1879–1956)

  • Marie Rosalie (1880–1966)
  • Albrecht Arthur Friedrich Wilhelm (1882-1882)

He concluded his second marriage on October 25, 1887 in Slawentzitz with Margarete Princess zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen (1865–1940), daughter of Prince Hugo zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen and his wife Pauline nee. Princess zu Fürstenberg , with whom he had the following children:

  • Maria Viktoria (1889-1934)

  • Friedrich Wilhelm (1890–1918), fallen
