history

The Potsdamer Chaussee was renamed in 1897 north of the Karolinenhöhe for the 100th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm I in "Wilhelmstrasse". The Wilhelm city received its name also at that time; previously it was called Potsdamer or Pichelsdorfer Vorstadt.

Extensive military installations were built on Wilhelmstrasse. The fortress prison was completed in 1881. The barracks were built in 1883–1886.
