The Wilhelmtheater was a building in the East Saxon city of Görlitz . It was built between 1888 and 1889 on the site of the former theater in the Kaiser Garden according to plans by the Görlitz architect Gerhard Röhr .

history

The theater, named after the German Emperor Wilhelm I , opened on May 26, 1889. In the large theater hall - the so-called Kaisersaal - up to 2000 spectators could be accommodated. In addition to the Imperial Hall, there were several smaller rooms, such as B. the Feldherrensaal . The garden restaurant could seat around 3000 guests.

Performances took place in the house during the summer break of the city theater, as well as amateur plays and concerts, balls and other social events. Around 1911 the theater was rebuilt and then opened as a variety theater and cinema Union-Theater . From 1915 it was used exclusively as a movie theater. In 1936 the house was expanded to include the Scala variety and cabaret .

After the Second World War , it was modernized between 1950 and 1951 and reopened on June 30, 1951 under the name Karl-Marx-Klubhaus of VEB Waggonbau Görlitz . During the GDR era, political congresses and balls were held here. In the 1980s, the interior was restored to its original design, but closed in 1989 as a result of the fall of the Wall . By this time the house had already lost its numerous roof decorations. Only the towers on the triangular bay windows were preserved in a simpler form.

The successor building - the Citycenter Frauentor

In the 1990s it was used again as a theater under the name Theater am Karstadt - TAK . The former Kaisersaal was used by a bank branch between 1991 and 1993 and then, until 1999, the neighboring Karstadt department store was used as a sales area for the technology department. Despite strong protests from the citizens of Görlitz and the preservation authorities, the intact building and some neighboring villas on Postplatz had to give way to a new shopping center with a parking garage in 2001.
