Willi Fährmann (born December 18, 1929 in Duisburg ; † May 25, 2017 in Xanten ) was a German author for children and young people . (1980) and Time to Hate, Time to Love (1985) .

Life

Willi Fährmann's father came from Liebenberg in East Prussia and found work in the König brewery in Duisburg-Beeck . He himself was born in Duisburg and began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in 1946 . Then he acquired over the gifted special permission to study at the Pedagogical Academy and began at the PH Munster and in Oberhausen with the study of pedagogy . From 1953 he worked as a teacher at a primary school in Duisburg and in 1963 was appointed headmaster to Xanten . Here he was able to establish intensive contacts with young people who were very helpful in terms of his later work as a writer. From 1972 until his retirement he held the post of school councilor . As a member of the Catholic youth, Fährmann traveled to England, where he mainly dealt with the life and work of Thomas More . For several years he supported the work of the youth association of the Catholic Young Community (KJG) by taking on the role of editor-in-chief for their magazine forum .

Fährmann is the father of the cameraman and screenwriter Tom Fährmann . He had lived in Xanten on the Lower Rhine since 1963 and was a member of the PEN Center Germany . Willi Fährmann died in May 2017 at the age of 87.

Literary work

The pedagogue Fährmann brought contemporary history into his youth books. Many of Fährmann's books are set in the time of National Socialism , but Fährmann also took up other topics.

In 1962, The Year of the Wolves was Fährmann's first book published by Arena Verlag . This tells the story of the Bienmann family in East Prussia, who fled the advancing Red Army during the Second World War , and is based on the memories of the family's son, who came from the hometown of Fährmann's father. He had met him after the end of the war and after further research had finally published his stories. Further publications followed, including Kristina, don't forget , the story of a German- Polish girl who is outlawed as a German in Poland and as a Polish woman in Germany.

Ferryman also often used the city of Xanten as a motif for his books. His retelling of the Nibelungenlied in the volumes Siegfried von Xanten and Kriemhilds Rache appeared in 1987 and 1988, respectively , while his story Es Happened in the Neighboring House (1968) is set in Xanten in the 19th century. It is based on the true story of a Jewish butcher who was wrongly accused of ritual murder of a child in 1891 and who was subsequently confronted with insurmountable prejudices and attacks by the Christian population.

Fährmann's books have been translated into more than 80 languages.
