Willi Piecyk

Wilhelm Ernst "Willi" Piecyk (born August 11, 1948 in Munich ; † August 1, 2008 in Großhansdorf ) was a German politician ( SPD ). He was since 2004 transport spokesman of the SPE - faction in the European Parliament and 1980-1982 National Chairman of the Young Socialists and 1991-1999 regional chairman of the SPD in Schleswig-Holstein .

Life and work

After completing secondary school , Piecyk entered the police force in 1966 and worked as a police officer until 1968. He then attended an evening grammar school , where he passed the Abitur in 1972 . From 1972 to 1979 he studied educational science and political science at the University of Hamburg , which he completed with the first state examination for teaching at elementary and secondary schools and as a political scientist .

Then Piecyk worked from 1979 to 1992 in adult education as a director of studies at the Gustav Heinemann educational institution in Malente .

Willi Piecyk died almost two weeks before his 60th birthday after suffering from cancer for a long time.

Political party

Since 1972 he was a member of the SPD. He was initially involved with the Young Socialists in Pinneberg , whose state board in Schleswig-Holstein he was a member from 1974 to 1978, most recently as deputy state chairman. From 1980 to 1982 he was federal chairman of the Jusos.

From 1984 to 1986 Piecyk was chairman of the SPD district association Stormarn . From 1985 to 1991 he was first deputy chairman and then from 1991 to 1999 chairman of the SPD regional association Schleswig-Holstein.

MP

Piecyk was a member of the European Parliament from 1992 until his death . From 1994 to 1999 he was vice-president of the delegation for relations with Estonia , from 1995 to 2003 deputy chairman of the group of SPD parliamentarians and from 2003 to 2004 vice-chairman of the temporary committee for the "improvement of safety at sea" (MARE). From 2004 Piecyk was the transport policy spokesman for the PES group. For the elections to the European Parliament in 2009 he should again take a top position on the PES list.

Honors

As of 2011, the SPD regional association Schleswig-Holstein will announce a prize in his name, which is awarded every two years for ideas of “common European cooperation” in the youth sector. A conference room was named after him in the Gustav Heinemann educational facility in Malente.
