William Arrowsmith

William Ayres Arrowsmith (born April 13, 1924 in Orange , New Jersey , † February 20, 1992 in Boston ) was a classical philologist and comparative literary scholar.

Arrowsmith studied at Oxford University and Princeton University . He received twelve honorary doctorates for his work, the Prix ​​de Rome , a Guggenheim grant and the Eugenio Montale Prize . In Germany he is best known for his translation of Chief Seattle's speech .

His granddaughter Nina Arrowsmith (born September 13, 1979) founded the literature and concept agency Arrowsmith Agency in Hamburg in 2005.
